Shift 2: Unleashed

Just so you know, I received this game at no charge by way of Playstation Plus, and it was only on for 45 minutes. I say it was “on” rather than “I played it,” because too much of the beginning is unskippable live video of some racecar driver telling me how awesome I am and how cool I can become if I work hard and stick with it. Shut up. I suck, and your patronizing script reading is not helpful. It’s infuriating. By the time the game got around to letting me play, it just told me to figure out the controls so it could rank my control handicap and racing difficulty automatically. Based on that, my auto-steer and auto-brake were maxed out, and my difficulty was set to easy. I was still awful. I love kart racers, but apparently “realistic racing” games are not my thing, because I wasn’t even starting to enjoy it. I like to have fun wrecking, winning, and blowing crap up. I don’t want to choose between a Honda Civic and a Ford Focus! Give me the Bugatti from the get-go! Well, I can have it if I just buy it for real money… Seriously, I think I just need to go pick up Twisted Metal.

Burnout is about as close to "realistic racing" as I can tolerate. I tried to play Need for Speed: Carbon and just could not get into it.

I love the thrill of the competition in racing games, not the realism. I don't care how realistic you make it. Other people do, but those are the same type of people who prefer NBA 2K whatever to NBA Jam. I think it is awesome that they can add that for people in that interest, but it's not for me. Have you heard of the super realistic sword fighting game that Neal Stephenson got funded through Kickstarter? It sounds cool, for someone else.

Realistic sports games are my least favorite games. At least with racing, I can say, "Wheeee! I'm going so fast!" but with something like football or basketball or boxing, I feel like there are too many rules holding me back. When I play a video game, I want to be able to do ridiculous dunks and shove the other players. You know, do all the things you can't do in real life.
