PixelJunk Monsters
I love tower defense games, but I tried Pixel-Junk Monsters and initially hated it. It was a different style of TD than I had ever played. Basically, you have to transform the trees into the towers and pick up the coins the monsters drop. I had a problem with not being able to put my towers wherever I wanted. I hated picking up the coins that the monsters dropped, because I was constantly getting in the way and losing them. In a game where money is already tight, I wasn’t enjoying myself. I do love that upgrading the towers consists of doing a voodoo dance in front of them, which costs no money. Well, I put it away for a few months and then started it up again and played two-player with my non-gamer wife. It was much more enjoyable. One of us would get money and build towers while the other would upgrade. We played this game for 2-3 weeks for 2-3 hours a night. The earlier annoyance just became part of the learning curve, and I came to accept them whole-heartedly. The music is great, the style is fun to look at, and it is easy enough that my 5-year old daughter can play with me.
