Mario Party 9

I know, another Mario Party. For me, this is a renter. As for the party mode, it is the worst in the series. Rather than being able to strategize and buy items and collect the most stars through coins and treachery, everybody takes turns to move the same vehicle down the map where the mini-games are few and far between. For the most part, the game plays itself. Toad is there to tell you everything that happens, is going to happen, and just happened, and then he repeats it! Thankfully, there is a way to turn him “off.” He speaks less but still too much for my taste. The way you win is by getting mini stars which just sit on the board, so whoever is rolling the dice when the group goes through the stars gets ‘em. It’s not all garbage and hand-holding, though. The mini-game mode is all mini-games, all the time. They ditched the lame carnival theme from Mario Party 8, and this game feels more traditional in almost every way. Also, the games are fun and less motion-oriented than last time. If you are looking for a Mario Party, and the far superior Gamecube versions aren’t an option, this one will do nicely. Just stay away from party mode.

I didn't even know there was a Mario Party 9. That's how little I care about this franchise now. Mario Party 8 was an atrocity. Probably the worst in the series.

I didn't know until my daughter told me she ordered it through my nephew's GameFly. MarioParty 8 is by far the worst in the franchise. I found it unplayable. The biggest thing that made this a 1up is that it undid a lot of that garbage and became more traditional...except in party mode. Party mode is still stupid MP9

What a shame. I was intrigued when I heard about how MP9 was changing the gameplay on party mode. I thought that sharing a car might be a good idea because it would make everybody's turns go faster and result in more mini-game action. I haven't played any Mario Party game in a long time, but I always hated waiting for the slowpokes to look around at the map and take a long time just to decide to turn right or left after a roll! After reading this review, I can see how trying to fix this problem killed the competitiveness of the game. Too bad. The "game playing itself" part really bugs me. Who does Nintendo make these games for? Are they targeting 3-year-olds? I don't get it.

They are targeting parents. Parents know their kids will play this game for hours with out any questionable content, my 7-year-old loves it. I'll play the minigames with her, but not party mode. The board game is just boring. there are no items to buy and the only items you can collect are dice blocks. You can't really do any of the great sabotaging. My favorite MP was the one where one of the maps had you hike to the top of the mountain for the koopa guru to buy stars.
