This was my first foray into Minecraft, and now I see how players can easily lose years of their lives to the game or grow bored with it in the first five minutes. I really like the survival aspect, but once you’ve built a shelter (however meager), it’s like… okay, now what do I do? The sky’s the limit in terms of creating pictures and other structures, but tackling this on your own makes the whole experience feel tedious and lonely. I get the impression Minecraft was meant to be a social activity, which is where the Xbox version shines. Four-player splitscreen? Don’t mind if I do! Splitscreen + online? Even better! Once you’re in a world with other players, it suddenly doesn’t matter if all of you have a common goal or not. It’s just fun to run around with pickaxes and shovels, griefing each other. Yes, that 1600 MS point price is a whopper, and no one’s going to argue that the Xbox version is better than the PC version. If you’re not much of a PC gamer, though, and you have family/friends you want to share an open world with, then roll up those sleeves and dive in.
