I really like the idea of 2D platform racers like Raskulls or even Doritos Crash Course. Vertigo could be considered a lighter version of those. There aren’t a lot of obstacles you have to worry about, and in the multiplayer mode, you can’t interact with the other racers. It’s purely a dash to the finish. What makes it challenging and interesting are the speed boosts you can pick up along the way. By default, your character is really slow, but if you string enough boosts together by tapping A as you pass these hot spots, you’ll zip through the level like Sonic the Hedgehog on fire. You go so fast, however, that beating the very stringent times in the single-player mode pretty much requires memorizing the levels instead of being quick to react. That’s not such a serious issue until you play with some friends who won’t stand a chance against anyone already familiar with the game’s design. When it comes to splitscreen 2D racing, then, Crash Course is the better game… and it’s free. If you’re itching to spend 80 points on something, though, this one is okay, too.
